A classical samurai martial arts system which can trace its roots back to the 17th century, as a fighting system it uses a full range of techniques from strikes aimed at vital pressure points, joint locks and hold downs as well as throwing techniques. The style also includes a full range of classical weapons from the Katana (Japanese sword), Jō (staff), to more specialist weapons such as the Naginata (pole-arm). Although a traditional system, the style also includes modern elements for self-defence. An important part of the art is the Shin-Ki-Tai, the practice of uniting the mind and body into a single unit from which the ki, or internal energy flow, this also helps to build confidence and build up more positive elements of the character.
