On November 20th this year, the Modern Kenpo Karate Association is proudly hosting a seminar called Feel the Fear: Adapt and Overcome. The purpose of the seminar is two-fold - it serves as an introduction/overview our form of Modern Kenpo and as a practical demonstration of the effects of Body Alarm Reaction in a combat situation.

Fear is Good - It Keeps us Alive

In organic, real combat situations everyone feels the onset fear - we refer to it as Body Alarm Reaction (BAR), a term that describes the instinctual recognition of threat, the subsequent adrenaline dump (as well as its varying side effects) and ultimately the choice of fight or flight.

Fear is often maligned as sign of weakness, and cowardice, however at the MKKA we recognise it for what it is an integral part of our innate survival mechanisms. In times of danger, it is natural to feel fear; it is good to feel fear - what is not good is being paralysed by its effects. Today, martial artists may be insulated from the realities of fear in their training, opting only to operate within controlled environments but we often simulate the effects of BAR in order to illustrate how difficult it is to actually fight under fear.

Feel the Fear: Adapt and Overcome is about more than exposing martial artists to BAR in order to test the practicality of their response, but rather rationalising fear itself and altering our practise in order to transform it from a misunderstood liability into a essential weapon for survival. We will be touching on threat perception, effective principles, elements and technique, stress testing and endurance so that you can learn how to overcome adversity.

We have held Feel the Fear Seminars in the past and it's something that we strive to bring the other martial artists in order to demonstrate that real emergent combat differs from anything that we can perform in the dojo or any match fighting scenario. This is a great seminar to attend if you really want to test yourself, if you've ever wondered "would this actually work in reality?" or even "could I make this work in reality?"
